The ToT on Participatory Rangeland Management was conducted as a component of the Biovision-funded “Building Drought Resilience in Samburu through Sustainable Rangelands Management” (DR-SRM) project, which is implemented by the VSF-Suisse in collaboration with the County Government of Samburu. The objective of the training was to build capacity of extension officers and other stakeholders in dissemination of PRM techniques with the aim of improving livestock feed availability through improved utilization efficiency and conservation practices. This is part of DR-SRM project objective aimed at restoring degraded rangelands, which is expected to result in increased livestock productivity, increased incomes and enhanced resilience to drought and other shocks among pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in Samburu County.

The PRM process supports the integration of local knowledge and provides a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities leading to subsequent development of sustainable resource exploitation and management options. The training was therefore conducted as a prerequisite for information transfer for better rangeland management, leading to enhanced uptake process and adoption of PRM techniques by the pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities. It is expected that the approach will lead to the communities’ better understanding and management of rangeland ecosystem through interrogation of their perceptions and views on their environment and livelihoods, and integrating them into the overall rangeland management in Samburu County.
