VALIDATION OF INTEGRATED GRAZING MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR SIX CONSERVANCIES IN AMBOSELI

Successful Development and Validation of Integrated Grazing Management Plan for Six Conservancies (Kilitome, Osupuko, Nailepu, Nalarami, Olepolos and Oltiyani) under the Amboseli Land Owners Conservancies Association (ALOCA) within the Greater Amboseli Ecosystem in Kajiado County. Integrated Grazing Management Plan is critical for sustainable ecosystem management, it ensures that social, economic and environmental benefits are achieved for enhanced community resilience and improved livelihoods within the Rangelands.

OFFERING SUPPORT TO RANGELANDS FOR SUSTAINABLE MAASAI MARA ECOSYSTEM

Many times we watch and abet land degradation in Maasai Mara, through overgrazing exacerbated by lack of early land degradation warning system. Urgent Rehabilitation efforts are needed to save the renowned Maasai Mara Landscape. Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA).

WHY ARE RANGELANDS IMPORTANT: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE

Carolyne Kyalo from LARMAT, University of Nairobi and Dr. Klerkson Lugusa from United States International University Africa (USIU) facilitated a training on Rangeland Inventory, Assessment and Monitoring to Masaai Mara Wildlife Conservancy Association technical staff. The staff heads various dockets such as Natural Resource Management, gender and enterprises, education, Climate change, governance and to monitoring and evaluation.

RANGELAND INVENTORY, MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT TRAINING FOR CONSERVANCIES WITHIN THE MAASAI MARA ECOSYSTEM

Rangelands and their values, plant life forms (grassland, shrubland, desert, alpine, and some woodland ecosystems), have been facing a myriad of challenges in providing ecosystem goods and services that support the well-being of societies. The rangelands have continued to provide sufficient, safe and nutritious food to all people.

MULTI-STAKEHOLDERS FORUM:BEEF PRODUCTION FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH IN AFRICA AMIDST CLIMATE CHANGE

The department of LARMAT hosted a successful webinar on ‘Beef Production for Economic Growth in Africa Amidst Climate Change Impacts Experiences and Opportunities from Kenya and Bostswana on 4th October 2022; 3.00 - 5.00pm EAT. The webinar was attended by over 240 participants with representations from Kenya, Botswana, Uganda and Somalia. The webinar was a multi-stakeholders forum to discuss a very important issue in food and nutrition security in Kenya.

KENYA UNVEILS KSH. 9B STRATEGIC PLAN FOR GRASSLANDS AND RANGELANDS

The National Government of Kenya has unveiled a five-year Strategic Plan to manage and develop grassland and rangeland. State Department for Livestock Principal Secretary, Harry Kimtai, launched the Strategic Plan, which will be implemented in collaboration with key stakeholders, under the newly formed Grassland and Rangeland Society of Kenya (GRASK) under chairperson of Prof.

ROLE OF RANGELANDS IN SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) provided a lecture on Rangeland Ecosystems the Wake of Climate Change. The Webinar was organized by Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Kenya and Farmers Association of Community Self Help Investment Groups (FACHIG) Trust from Zimbabwe.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW BIODIVERSITY OF THE RANGELANDS AND ECO-TOURISM ACTIVITIES

Postgraduate and undergraduate pursuing BSc in Management and BSc in Management of Agro-ecosystems and Environments in this department on18th March, 2022 visited Nairobi National Park. The objectives of the field trip was to 1) Assist the students to understand better the concept of biodiversity 2) expose students to biodiversity of the Rangelands (ASALS), 3) Expose students to key concepts of Biodiversity conservation for tourism development in Kenya.
