The Chairman, LARMAT, Prof. Geofrey Kironchi assisted by Ms Carolyne Kyalo today 11th August 2020 Successfully defended 2019-2020 performance contract (PC) of the department via Google zoom. This rates department performance that fall under four key pillars set by the University of Nairobi. These are; Financial Stewardship and Discipline, Service Delivery, University Core Mandate (projects “Big Four” Initiatives, Projects/Programmes aligned to SDGs, SPS and SP) and other crosscutting issues within growth of the varsity.

Today the department of LARMAT conducted two exams online for undergraduate students with 98% attendance and successful exams answer sheet turned in. These were fourth and third year BSC in Management of Agroecosystems and Environment under taking Recycling and Bio-conversion of Organic Waste and  Environmental planning and Management respectively. It was noted as recommendable progress since inception of second semester exams 2019- 2020 amid Corona virus pandemic.

The Dean of students at the University of Nairobi Mr. Johnson Ireri Kinyua invites students for a Career Development Training on 12th June, 2020 at 5:00pm to 6:00pm. This training will be facilitated by a UoN alumnus Dr. David Amakobe, President & CEO of Africa Wood Inc. Training will be hosted via Live Webinar under Theme “Never Be Unemployed: Solve A Local Problem with a Scalable Solution.” Audience limit is 100pax.

On Thursday, 11th June 2020, over 118 University of Nairobi staff drawn from the 6 campuses were trained on use of google classroom for online exam preparation, processing and administration amid Covid-19 pandemic. The training was comprehensive and demonstrated understanding that this can be implemented with efforts of both lectures and students. However, this requires further scrutiny and training to fully understand the system with support of UoN Examination Centre personnel(s).

Ecosystems exist as complex socio-ecological systems. There is constant intervention by society through management, resource use and pollution. Due to this, ecosystem management and conservation is key to Biodiversity conservation.

As the world’s most important group of pollinators, bees are a crucial part of agricultural production and natural ecosystem function. They contribute immensely to food security through pollination services; provide mankind with hive products of many economic benefits.

Pastoralists rely on livestock for their livelihood and pastoralist communities are widespread in the arid- and semiarid regions of Africa. In fact, 70 % of East Africa’s livestock population resides in Kenya. The harsh conditions of the drylands with severe droughts, erratic rainfall and land degradation make it difficult to sustain on conventional agriculture or other activities. As a consequence, food security in the drylands record the lowest indices compared to other areas in Eastern Africa.

Two MSc. Students in Range Management, Edwin Maingi and Sylvia Muchiri, both from the department of Land Resource Management and Technology (LARMAT), were among students who attended a 10 day emerging scientist’s workshop in Oloisukut conservancy, Narok County.
