HOW TO DEAL WITH ENCROACHMENT OF UNWANTED WOODY SPECIES (TRAMAP PROJECT)

TRAMAP Project team from February 21st- 25th 2022, held a Consultative meeting with objective 1) to Identify community members to be actively involved in TRAMAP activities 2) Identify site(s) for bush encroachment demo plots 3) Develop a “Rich Map” with the communities on current situations and vision for the future with better invasive species management.

Some of key messages deliberated were:

  1. Community buy-in of project activities will largely dictate its successful implementation
  2. Bush encroachment diminishes grazing capacity of rangelands.
  3. Community participation in citizen science -co-production of knowledge is sustainable

The  Collaborating partners of TRAMAP team are; Dr. Staline Kibet, Dr. Stephen Mureithi and Dr. Jane Mutune of University of Nairobi, Mr. Nathaniel Tum of County government of Samburu and Mr. Khalif Abey of Kenya Camel Association) with Kalama Community wildlife Conservancy Board members at Kalama Conservancy office.
