Prof. Richard Onwonga and Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) welcomed two fellows from Burundi (Ms. Manirakiza Isidonie and Mr. Nimbona Felix) from the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock and National Veterinary Laboratory. They are supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Technical Cooperation Fellowship on animal nutrition and quality assessment of animal feeds.
The fellows are hosted by Dr. Oscar K. Koech, in the Department of LARMAT for a period of one month. They are undergoing intensive training and experiential learning at the University and at Industry (Unga feed Limited).
The fellowship training include: Overview on feeding various species and classes of livestock, Evaluation of livestock feed components and their nutritive value, Formulation of livestock feed rations using local resources, Livestock feed conservation and utilization, Basic requirements and SOPs of a livestock nutrition laboratory, Feed ration formulation, Experiential learning at Unga feed Millers.
This is part of international collaboration by the University of Nairobi in technology development and transfer of knowledge and regional capacity building. International Atomic Energy Agency has been working with UoN actively in areas of livestock production and nutrition, including support to regional capacity development collaborations and linkages. The collaboration contributes to scientific knowledge sharing from the ongoing research works, support to community outreach and practical training to the partners.
