TRAINING AND INSTALLATION OF CAVITY RING-DOWN SPECTROSCOPY (CRDS)

Jan Wozniak with the trainee team from Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences

A successful week it was, with hands-on training on use of Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Land Resource Management & Agricultural Technology. CRDS is state of the art trace gases measuring equipment that forms part of quick and real time GHGs measurements. Notably, this is the first Model of its kind in Eastern Africa. The faculty, through the department of LARMAT, has acquired this equipment courtesy of the  collaborative work with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Dr. Oscar Koech who serves as the Project Scientific Consultant for Regional Project (RAF 5090). The iconic state of the art equipment will support climate and environmental research works in an effort to address climate change effects and  thus providing data that will guide strategies and practices aimed at  mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The training on the use of the equipment was conducted by Jan Wozniak, Field application Scientist from PICARRO, Netherlands on 27th and  28th March, 2025. Technologists at the faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary sciences at Upper Kabete Campus as well as technologists from International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) were trained.
