SOIL FERTLITY: REGIONAL (AFRA) TRAINING COURSE ON INTEGRATED CROPPING LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION SYSTEM

Dr. Oscar Koech, from Department of LARMAT, UoN, giving a session training on integrated crop-livestock production system.

Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi from 28th November, 2022- 2nd December 2022 facilitated a learning platform on Integrated Soil- Crop Livestock- Production system for sustainability in Africa. The forum was Supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Organized by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organizations (KALRO) and the University of Nairobi, Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT). African Researchers from Ghana, Nigeria, Eswatini, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Algeria to cross learn and develop a regional strategy to support Sustainable Systems. The Technical facilitation was by Prof. Rogerio Martins Mauricio from Brazil and. In attendance to the training from UoN was Dr. Ann Karuma-Soil Scientist and former students from LARMAT Mr. Walter Wafula and Ms. Angela W. Maina.

Through an integrated soils, crop, and livestock system (ISCLPS), the RAF 5090 project aims to develop and implement a model for increasing agricultural productivity and addressing climate change and its impacts at the farm level. Under the integrated system, nuclear science and technology will be used to assess agricultural activities.  The RAF project brings together a network of soil and livestock experts to learn about approaches for address declining agricultural productivity in a participatory, inclusive manner that involves farmers.  The training workshop aims to equip country counterparts with the skills needed to identify and implement mechanisms to integrate a Soils-cropping-Livestock perspective into their work, as well as co-develop a roadmap for future activities.
