Two MSc students (Sharon Teyie and Fredrick Otieno) from Department of LARMAT who have been ‘investigating the charcoal value chain and the impacts of the production process on soil and vegetation properties” presented their research findings through poster in workshop on the charcoal production and its impacts on the Rangelands in Northwestern Kenya held from 17th 21 February 2020 in Marich Pass, Central Pokot. This was with guide from their supervisor, Dr. Oliver V. Wasonga from University of Nairobi; Department of LARMAT who also attended.
The Workshop was sponsored through the “Producing Charcoal in the Sub-Saharan Drylands: The Contested Fuelscape of Central Pokot, Kenya” project. The German Research Foundation funds this project. Prof. Dr. Marcus Nüsser & Dr. Christoph Bergmann lead it from University of Heidelberg, South Asia Institute, Department of Geography, Germany and undertaken in Collaboration with Dr. Oliver V. Wasonga from University of Nairobi, Department of LARMAT. The project adopts an actor-oriented analysis of charcoal supply chains from Central Pokot. It considers the social, economic, environmental and legal aspects of the charcoal trade, and assesses associated risks, trade-offs and vulnerabilities. The research aims towards a contextual understanding of stakeholder relationships and transactions, and providing suitable entry points for policies that seek to facilitate more sustainable and resilient pro-poor value chains. In addition, the project focuses on the impacts of charcoal production on soil, vegetation and general land cover in Central Pokot Sub-County of West Pokot County, using innovative technologies (E.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and ground measurements.
