LOCALLY FABRICATED CARBONIZATION KILN TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INVASIVE PROSOPIS JULIFLORA AND ACACIA REFICIENS SPECIES IN SAMBURU COUNTY

Practical training on the use of Charcoal Kiln and Briquette making machine in Lerata Village, Samburu County

Invasive species have continued to be a big threat to sustainable ecosystems management in many parts of the world. Invasions in the world have been increasing as a result globalization, population increase and increasing human activities to the environment.

In Samburu County and other ASAL counties, invasive Prosopis juliflora and Acacia reficiens has continued to affect productivity. This has necessitated the need for sustainable management and utilization as a way of controlling their invasion.

VSF-Suisse in collaboration with the technical support from the Department of Land Resource Management & Agricultural Technology, University of Nairobi, from 14-19th Feb 2022 supported the communities with Modern drum kiln for charcoal carbonization to facilite utilization of cleared Prosopis and A. reficiens wood for the benefit of the communities as a control practice.

Dr. Oscar Koech and Dr. Oliver Wasonga provided ToTs training on how to use the kiln and further make high quality charcoal briquettes as a value addition process for better markets. The community appreciated the technology that would save on labor, time and also increase charcoal recovery rate besides saving the soils from traditional earth kilns impacts.

The training was supported by VSF-Suisse in collaboration with the Department of Land Resource Management & Agricultural Technology, University of Nairobi.
