    Philosophy, Rationale

    Philosophy
The philosophy behind the formulation of this doctoral programme is informed by the many unfolding environmental, social, economic and even political changes in global rangelands. All these changes seem to rapidly undermine the existing understanding of the complex interplay between human activities and the rangelands which leads to increased vulnerability of local communities to various environmental shocks including climate change. This further exacerbated by lack of skilled manpower in range  management in most African countries. Majority of range professionals are ill-equipped to handle complex biophysical and socio-cultural issues germane to the rangeland ecosystems. Therefore, need for more specialized manpower in range resource management cannot be over-emphasized if the productivity of these vast tracks of lands is to be enhanced and the much-needed increase in human support capacity, especially for pastoral and agro-pastoral societies realized. The objective of this program is therefore to produce graduates who are highly trained and skilled to seamlessly provide leadership in the transformation of rangelands from liabilities to  assets. The graduates will spearhead the application of appropriate technologies and innovations for sustainable management of range ecosystems, participate in development decisions and play a pivotal role in carrying out sound research that will generate information to guide policy formulations and development decisions at local, regional, national and international arena.

    Rationale

This curriculum takes full cognizance of the complexity and heterogeneity of rangeland ecosystems and hence is customized to equip the learners with knowledge, skills and experiences necessary for sustainable management of these ecosystems. The curriculum also recognizes the role of tertiary education in unlocking the potential of the ecosystems. It is therefore aims at producing a brand of professionals who understand the unique needs of both the communities which reside in these lands as well their biophysical, social, economic and political environments.

    Mode of Delivery

The programme will be offered under three modes of delivery: face-to-face; Open, Distance and electronic Learning (ODeL) , Blended learning for students who cannot attend regular University programmes.
