The department of LARMAT hosted a successful webinar on ‘Beef Production for Economic Growth in Africa Amidst Climate Change Impacts Experiences and Opportunities from Kenya and Bostswana on 4th October 2022; 3.00 - 5.00pm EAT. The webinar was attended by over 240 participants with representations from Kenya, Botswana, Uganda and Somalia. The webinar was a multi-stakeholders forum to discuss a very important issue in food and nutrition security in Kenya. This was a timely forum at the stage where our farmers/pastoralists are suffering with the current droughts. Animals are dying, yet the country is beef deficient! Beef farming has been known to be a profitable venture over decades, with the ever increasing demand for beef that can’t be met by domestic production.The Rangelands of Kenya and the region provide the bulk of the beef consumed in the country, which is produced within two main systems: large-scale dairy-meat, commercial ranching and small- scale dairy-meat production. To respond to this, Grasslands management is a vital concern, and that is why, the ministry of livestock and fisheries development with stakeholders like KALRO, UoN has formed Grassland and Rangelands Society of Kenyas (GRASK) to help address the many issue in our Rangelands.
