KENYA- JAPAN COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH VISIT

From 30th October to 1st November 2019 The Department of Land Resources Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) hosted visitors from University of Hokkaido, Japan whom are collaborating with to develop research proposals. Professor Yoshitaka Uchida, Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, Japan led his students Ms Yvonne Madegwa, a PhD student, Graduate School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, Japan (Also  former MSc Student in LARMAT) and Mr. Takamitsu Ohigashi, Master’s student, Graduate School of Global Food Resources, Hokkaido University, Japan.

During their visits, they conducted soil sampling in a maize field at Kabete University Agricultural field station farm and at NARL-KARLO maize farm and later a maize field farm at Katumani-KARLO field station. Their objective of soil sampling was for DNA extraction from the soil and identification of microorganism that causes nutrient losses through various processes in soils.

On 1st of November, Yvonne and Takamitsu gave lecture seminars to students and staff in the department on their research work. Yvonne also enlightened student with intentions to study in Japanese Universities on successful call applications. The trio were led by Dr. George Karuku, lecturer in LARMAT.
