Dr. Oscar Koech, Lecturer from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) provided technical training to trainees from Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya within the Mandera Triangle. The training covered Cross-border natural resource management by the communities and the guidelines for developing a cross border resource sharing agreement.
The main purpose of the training was “to support technical team to lead in the community resource use, sharing and management agreements for the cross-border areas to reduced conflicts and resource degradation”. The European Union Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF), Building Opportunities for Resilience in the Horn of Africa (BORESHA) project sponsored the training.
Among the trainees were staff from Care International, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, Kenya Forest Service among other partners. The training support community-driven participatory approaches in addressing the cross-border resource management challenge, seeking to address the shared nature of the risks and opportunities within the border areas. This efforts are geared towards supporting efforts by EU's programme within the Cross-Border areas of the Horn of Africa, mainly focusing to prevent and mitigate the impact of resource based conflicts and to promote economic development and greater resilience in the different cross-border region.
