Samburu

The Department of LARMAT in partnership with VSF-Suisse has been supporting communities’ capacity building on sustainable rangeland management under Biovision-funded Building Drought Resilience in Samburu Through Sustainable Rangelands Management (DR-SRM) project.

Through the project, County Government officials have been trained to impart sustainable rangeland management knowledge and skills to the larger pastoralist communities in Samburu County. 

Prossopis juliflora is a famous plant for the wrong things; all we hear about it is its invasiveness, leading to loss of pasture, septic wounds caused by the thorns on animals and humans, among other environmental ills. This has been the basis of the efforts towards eradicating it from the African arid and semi-arid rangelands where it has colonized thousands of hectares of land.

Pastoral leaders, elders and representatives of Samburu and Boran communities(Deedha) from Isiolo county between Monday  12th- Tuesday 13th April , 2021 were trained on Leadership and governance which entailed Gender role in pastoral communities, inclusiveness in Decision making and their participatory in implementation of climate change projects/ programmes  in their grassroots .

Dr.SM Mureithi of Department of LARMAT, University of Nairobi accompanied by the Country Director of Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF-Suisse) ,(Kenya and Somalia) and Eric Rosana of VSF-Suisse Kenya are on a four day (from 2nd November, 2020)  scoping mission in Samburu County in preparation for the start of implementating the  “Building Drought Resilience in Samburu Through Sustainable Rangelands Management (DR-SRM) Project.
