Melia vokensii  the "Ukambani Camphor" proves to be the  most preferred tree  in the  envinronment restoration in Arid and semi arid areas of Eastern Kenya. Mukau   timber production is a way of alleviating  poverty to smallholder farmers in Kibwezi district.To improve this tree cultivation in Kibwezi, College of Agriculture and Veterianry Sciences (CAVs)  registrar (Mrs Ngunga)  lead 150 Bsc  students in Range management, Agriculture, wildlife,food science, Management of agroecosystem,  Staffs from  field station and entire college in  a tree planting exercise at Kibwezi Dryland Farm on 8th and 22nd  November, 2012 .

Nancy Karanja is a professor in soil ecology at the University of Nairobi. From 2005 to 2009, Karanja was the sub-Saharan Africa regional coordinator for Urban Harvest, an initiative to enhance urban agriculture’s potential and food security in Kenya. She has led a number of studies on nutrient harvesting from urban organic waste, the reuse of urban wastewater for vegetable production, and the assessment of health risks associated with urban livestock systems.
