VIRTUAL EXAM ARM 503: RANGE MANAGEMENT IN PASTORAL SOCIETIES ON PROGRESS AT LARMAT

ARM 503: Range Management in Pastoral Societies is a first semester course offered to students taking MSc. Range Management at the Department of Land Resource Management & Agricultural Technology. This course seeks to provide students with the understanding of the rangelands as socio-ecological systems; how communities living in the rangelands management and utilize natural resources, particularly grazing and water resources to sustain their main source of livelihoods (extensive livestock production). In addition, the course covers the emerging trends, challenges and opportunities in the rangelands. 

Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

1. Explain the main climatic, ecological and socio-cultural and economic characteristics of the rangelands.
2. Describe strategies used by pastoralist communities to harness the resources that are unevenly distributed in space and time, and to cope with both natural and man-made shocks.
3. Analyze the emerging trends and their implication for range management and sustainability of pastoral systems in Africa.
4. Apply the acquired knowledge in influencing action, policy formulations and design of sustainable natural resource management systems in the rangelands.
