DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL FEED INVENTORY AND FEED BALANCE

Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) participated in the review and validation of national feed inventory and feed balance spearheaded by National Feed Secretariat at the State Department for Livestock. The development of the feed inventory and feed balance was made possible through support by FAO’s strategic programming in early warning systems.

Over the years, feed and nutrition security has not been considered as a requisite for interventions to cater for increased livestock productivity. Thus, the national efforts with support from State Department for Livestock, FAO and other partners seek to document the present feed situation and provide for the way forward on national livestock feed security for better livelihoods amidst the changing climatic conditions. The National feed balance development process has involved the collection of animal and crop data resources in all the counties using several tools that include the Animal Data Resource tool, Crop Tool and Predictive Livestock Early Warning System decision support tools.
