Grade 1 Goats for Export to Yemen & Oman and Truck Delivering Hay at the Market

Despite the export ban imposed by Saudi Arabia on livestock from Somaliland in 2016, the otherwise very busy Hargeisa and Tog Wajaale livestock markets still show some vibrancy judging from other business activities (Plate 1) that piggy back on the livestock market.

At the time of our visit in May, 2019, the average volume of livestock transactions at the Hargeisa market was approximately 1,000 heads per day down from 40,000 heads during Hajj season (annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca). The markets still support off peak sheep and goat (Plate 2) export to Oman and Yemen which so far are not very stringent in their import regulations.
