Bachelor of Science in Range Management

Overview

In Kenya, rangelands cover over 80% of the country and are home to about 36% of the human population, 50% of the national livestock herd and most of the wildlife and biodiversity. Despite their importance, rangelands in Africa are subjected to human-induced degradation, with 31% of the area estimated to suffer severe loss of productivity. The sources of degradation range from inappropriate cultivation of marginal areas, deforestation to overgrazing. Presently, forest cover is disappearing at the rate of 3.7 to 5 million ha per year, and grazing contributes about 34.5% of the total soil loss in these areas. This has placed the rangelands to be hotspots of ecological vulnerability and desertification. Observed rangeland resource degradation trends is made worse by climate change that has increased the frequency and intensity of droughts, flush floods, as well as, increased livelihood risks for the local communities.

To achieve rangelands livelihood and environmental security, there is need to build knowledge and understanding of rangeland production systems and underlying ecological processes. Therefore, there is need for graduates with technological and managerial skills on rangeland ecosystems management. The revised BSc. Rangeland Resource Management curriculum aims at training and equipping rangeland professionals with appropriate scientific knowledge and skills required to implement sustainable and environment friendly technologies and practices to meet secure livelihoods for the people, as well as, make rangelands to continue to play a significant role in the national, regional and global economy. The program will empower the professionals meet emerging socio-economic and environmental challenges as envisaged in government development plans, e. g. vision 2030. Also, the revised course content addresses issues in internationally and nationally recognized conventions and protocols (CCD, CBD, and the Kyoto protocol on climate change) that partly focus on rangelands.

  1. The teaching period for the degree programme shall extend over not less than four academic years or their equivalents. Each academic year shall consist of two semesters of 15 teaching weeks and two weeks of examination.
  2. A candidate enrolled for the degree shall satisfactorily complete the programme in a period of not more than twice the minimum period for which he/she was registered for the degree.
  3. A candidate for B.Sc. Range Management shall participate and complete course work and practical assignments that may be applicable to programme. Admission to the examination at the end of the semester shall be based on satisfactory completion of such requirements.
  4. Each student shall be required to undertake range field practice after completion of the second semester of the third year of study.

Philosophy, Rationale

Advances in various aspects of range science and community development practices in recent years suggest a common framework for managing drylands. This framework, the Dryland Development Paradigm, centres on the livelihoods of humans in drylands and their dependence on these ecosystems, through the study of highly interactive human-environment systems. The dryland paradigm responds to recent research and policy trends that link ecosystem management with human livelihoods. It is a convergence of insights and key advances drawn from a diverse array of research in desertification, vulnerability, poverty alleviation, and community development.

Universities have a key role in this new paradigm which will need them to be proactive within national innovation systems to generate relevant and timely interventions for improving livelihoods. Thus, this degree programme will contribute to the goal of improving the livelihoods of communities in drylands through sustainable resource management supported by focused research, undergraduate training and community-based interventions. The programme is geared towards inspiring learners to provide leadership and stewardship and give hope and faith to the dryland societies that they can excel in whatever they choose to do with passion, moral responsibility and strong sense of patriotism.

Rationale

The drylands cover 65% of Africa Continent land mass and are home to nearly 400 Million Africans. In Kenya, drylands cover more than 80% of land mass, hold approximately 70% of the national livestock herd, and are home to most of the country’s national parks that are the foundation of its thriving wildlife tourism. In the recent past, drylands have attracted new investments in form of irrigated agriculture, payment for ecosystem services, mining, wind and solar power generation among others. With the promulgation of Kenyan Constitution 2010, much of the functions previously performed by national government have been devolved to county government. Capacity needs assessment done in five Counties of northern Kenya in 2017 indicated the need for well trained personnel to undertake responsibility within the rangeland, wildlife and livestock sectors. To improve dryland livelihood and environmental security, there is a need to build knowledge and understanding of dryland production systems and underlying socio-ecological processes. This curriculum aims at training and equipping dryland professionals with appropriate scientific knowledge and skills required to implement sustainable and environmental friendly technologies and practices to meet secure livelihoods for the people, as well as, make drylands to continue to play a significant role in the national, regional and global economy. The program will empower the professionals to meet emerging socio-economic and environmental challenges nationally, regionally and internationally.

Mode of Delivery

The programme will be offered under two modules; full time (Module I)
