Dr. Koech Oscar of the University of Nairobi, Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT), a pasture expert at the African Dryland Institute for Sustainability (ADIS) conducted  pasture training and outreach on commercialization of pasture production in Garissa County during the pasture week on 18th May 2017.  The overall goal of the pasture week activity in Garissa County was to create awareness and provide a learning platform where pasture experts, pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, traders, service providers and county government and development agencies could meet and share experiences, technologies, knowledge and skills that will enable increased pasture and fodder production and utilization for sustainable livestock production as a business. After the pasture week event, the flowing achievements were realized;

  1. Increased awareness among partners and the county government officials on fodder technologies USAID/AVCD-LC/ADIS is promoting to ensure attainment increased feed availability for better livestock production in Garissa.
  2. Increased awareness among producers about importance of fodder production, conservation and the opportunities for linkage to a viable business model.
  3. Establishment of the pasture week committee as a platform for lobbying and advocacy, and ownership of pasture week by the county government and the development partners with the aim of institutionalizing it within the Garissa County Integrated Development Plans (CIDP).
  4. Establishment of a multi-stakeholder platform at county level for purposes of promotion of innovative and new business approach to commercial fodder production. The platform will enhance joint planning and coordination of the present efforts into the future annual pasture week events.
