The University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of LARMAT, Kenya and  IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) in Somaliland have established a collaborative research, outreach and training programme to support Rangeland Management in Somaliland with the support of World Vision Somalia (WV Somalia).

The objective of this partnership is to investigate proper management and utilization of the invasive species Prosopis juliflora and the use of biotechnology in propagation of Frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra). This is in participation with the local communities of Somaliland. Frankincense tree is known to be of significant socio-cultural value and contributes significantly to the household economy among the communities. The project seeks to enhance its sustainable utilization and management through propagation of seedlings.

Dr. Oscar Koech, a lecturer and researcher at the Department of LARMAT

and Ms. Sicily Muchira, a Biotechnologist at the Department of Plant Science and Crop Science attended a one week inception meeting and project sites field visits from 14th -21st March 2017 in Somaliland.

The plenary agreed to increase collaborative research and outreach between partners in solving numerous rangeland management problems encountered in the region. The present collaboration is vital and will greatly contribute to the sustainable management of the rangeland environment in Somaliland, especially in controlling spread of invasive tree species i.e. Prosopis juliflora and propagation of highly valuable Boswellia sacra. This collaboration will also be support ISTVS with biotechnological laboratory equipment as well provision for human resource capital geared to development and domestication of the research activity in future.
