TRAINING TO INCREASE PRODUCTION, ACCESS AND TRADE IN PASTURES THROUGH ACCELERATED PASTURE VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT (AVCD PROJECT) IN GARISSA, KENYA

Dr. Koech Oscar, of the University of Nairobi, Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT), a pasture expert at the African Dryland Institute for Sustainability (ADIS) conducted community training and outreach on pasture production in Garissa County. The training was conducted from 12-17th September, 2016 and  reached 9 farming groups and 2 Community Based Natural Resource Management Committee (CBNRM). The training covered module one topics of the pasture component in the planned activities for implementation by the ADIS, University of Nairobi under the ‘Feed the Future Accelerated Value Chain Development (AVCD) Program for smallholder Farmers and Pastoralists with Technologies and Innovations in Kenya’.The training aimed to provide the project beneficiaries with technical knowledge on the importance of pasture production, pasture species selection criteria, selection of reseeding/pasture production range sites and land preparation technologies for onsite water harvesting for pastures and crops.

This training was very necessary to identify specific intervention sites, identify exact beneficiary groups for the planned AVCD project pasture component activities as well as to participatory engage the beneficiaries and stakeholders to ensure ownership and sustainability of the project. The visit allowed interaction with 9 beneficiary groups, identified the reseeding sites and pasture plots for reseeding and identified demonstration plots for future training during the project period. This training contributed to capacity development on practical fodder production technologies for the pasture groups,CBNRM committees and youth groups with interests in fodder value chain.
