THE IGAD SHEIKH TECHNICAL VETERINARY SCHOOL,SOMALILAND

Dr. Koech Oscar, a lecturer and researcher at the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of LARMAT, conducted a project Monitoring and Evaluation progress and a follow-up on collaborative research, outreach and training programme at IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) in Somaliland  from 2nd  to 10th June 2018,. This is an initiative supported by World Vision Somalia (WV Somalia). The Monitoring team included Mr. Mohamed Nagueyeh Amin from WV Somalia and Mr. Kenneth Tembe from ISTVS.

The mandate of the collaborative project is to “investigate the proper management and utilization of the invasive species Prosopis Juliflora and the use of biotechnology in propagation of Frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra) with the participation of the local community in Somaliland”

Frankincense tree has a significant socio-cultural value and contributes extensively to the household economy among the communities. The project seeks to enhance this tree sustainable utilization and management through propagation of seedlings.

Dr. Koech had the opportunity to plan and intimate the renovation of the only tissue culture laboratory in Somaliland supported by World Vision, which will seek to build local capacity on tissue culture propagation technology. This includes propagation of Frankincense tree, potential fodders and fruit trees. The project also will build capacity of agro pastoralist on dry land crops agronomy, dry land seed production, bulking and management.
